For well over 300 years, the island has laid dammed earth for a wide range of important functions for the city: from shipyard to war hospital, cannon storage, cold store and paper warehouse. Today, most Copenhageners best remember the time when paper was stored, which gave Christiansholm its current nickname: THE PAPIRØEN.

It was only a few years ago that the island became accessible to ordinary Copenhageners, and the island's temporary food market in particular was a great success. For just over 300 years, the island was a closed area – alternately owned by the state, the navy, industry and the port – and within a very short time, PAPIRØEN became a new cultural center and a popular excursion destination.

In the coming years, PAPIRØEN will go on another journey, when the island is developed into a new urban district with innovative architecture, a water culture center, international hotel, food hall, housing and unique cultural offerings. All surrounded by a new harbor promenade with recreational activities.

The island is located on the new axis of experiences, gastronomy and culture, which connects classic Copenhagen with all the newer offers on Holmen and Refshaleøen.

With an inviting mix of culture, food concepts and recreational activities, PAPIRØEN is Copenhagen's new urban oasis surrounded by water - in the inner harbor's best location.
